HISTORY Samuel J. Anderson was born in the year 2008, five years before the first kaiju emerged from that godforsaken rift. Despite his young age, Anderson has vivid memories of sitting in front of the television as the news reported on the massive creature laying waste to the city around it. In the same way that the devastation of a train wreck was impossible to tear one's eyes away from, so too was the kaiju an arresting, captivating sight.
Growing up during the war was, by turns, no different than before the war and consumed by it. Biology classes speculated on kaiju anatomy and included a bit about bioluminescence to keep the children captivated. History classes began adding events from the beginning of the war to their pages and lectures. Lavish holidays were far less lavish, supplied as they were by rations, and were far more about being with one's family than the material side of things.
All given, the morals of growing up during a war with aliens shaped a good deal of who Samuel Anderson became. Meeting Delilah White in third grade put him on a path he, to this day, doubts he would have taken otherwise. They became friends over something as simple as the Pokemon game Delilah was playing. Sam had never played, and she had been appalled by the fact. He learned a lot about Pokemon over the next few years, though he never picked the game up himself.
By middle school, the two were inseparable. They were forever over at each others' houses, darting back to their own homes and beds just in time for curfew. Not a single person was surprised when the two began holding hands one day, and when Sam nervously pecked Delilah's cheek and she giggled, smiles abounded. Sam and Delilah embodied high school sweethearts when they were in high school, and still nobody was surprised when Sam proposed to her after graduation.
They were surprised, however, when Sam then turned around and accepted a wrestling scholarship to the Naval Academy. The end of the kaiju war had seen a sharp decline in interest in high military ranks as the possibility of being one of the elite defending the earth disappeared. Sam knew that he didn't have any trade skills, and he'd found he didn't much like school either, and he and Delilah agreed that working his way up a military ranking ladder would be for the best for them.
He did well in boot camp and was lucky enough to be stationed at a base near his hometown assisting with disaster cleanup and the coastal reconstruction efforts. Three years after Sam's graduation from the Academy, when they finally had the money, Sam and Delilah married. It was a small, quiet affair with few guests, and an enthusiastic honeymoon.
A few months into their marriage, as Sam's assignment was finishing, Delilah announced her pregnancy. Both were thrilled, if a little concerned as to how they would be able to afford caring for the child. Thankfully, Sam's commanding officer, a father of three and longtime husband himself, gave the younger man advice as to how to climb the ranks at a steady pace. If he was good at his job and showed he knew how to handle responsibility, the ranks would come.
And, miracle of miracles, two months after the birth of their baby boy- named James after his father, and the single most stressful thirty-eight hours of both husband and wife's lives- Sam was promoted.
