THE PLOT
In the year 2013, the human race's hopes and dreams for peaceful contact with an alien race from a distant star system crumbled to dust. The monstrous beasts that rose from a rift deep in the Pacific Ocean had stripped the Earth of its delusions and naivete. We could not have seen this coming, predicted it. And so the kaiju decimated the vast majority of San Francisco, attacking two other cities before we realized the truth: this was not something that would go away on its own. This was an invasion, and we would have to fight it.
Our solution? The jaeger program. Massive robots controlled by a pair of human pilots, big enough and bristling with enough firepower to take the kaiju down. And then we started winning. But the kaiju evolved, adapted. We started to lose jaegers and pilots. One by one, the Shatterdomes began to close down until only one remained. Humanity's last hope, the resistance. They won, with the jaegers Gipsy Danger and Striker Eureka being sacrificed to the cause.
For a time, we had won. The earth was saved and we rebuilt. Jaeger technology was not abandoned, as it was still very much useful. Mark 6 was a smaller, single-pilot jaeger largely used in reconstruction and other heavy lifting. Eventually, the kaiju became just another story told, a memory and part of our past.
Unfortunately, the past doesn't always stay put. The rift reopened in 2072, spitting out a category 3 kaiju that attacked Manila. Unlike the first time around, the two-pilot jaeger program was reinstated immediately. Thirteen Shatterdomes were recommissioned and furnished with staff and jaegers. Our job here at Shatterdome 13 is to make sure that history repeats itself, and that rift closes on those blue-blooded monsters.
