OVERVIEW
Marquis isn’t a happy man, that much is certain. Stoic would perhaps be the best word to describe him; that’s to say he isn’t very talkative. Possessing a rather pessimistic view on things the few instances he does speak is often highly cynical, sarcastic and generally rude. He wasn’t always like that however. Once Marquis was a rather outgoing individual, always ready to voice his opinion and listen to others in turn. One could have called him the perfect soldier. Capable, talented and more importantly willing to die for what he believed in. He never spoke out of line and followed orders to the book. That all changed when Marquis was forced to take the fall so that they Jaeger program retained it's credibility. While he doesn't at all blame the program for his imprisonment he can't help but feel a bit betrayed at them leaving him high and dry. Because of this he unknowingly developed a distrustful anti-authoritative and generally selfish attitude, unwilling to be locked away for anyone ever again. With that said despite he apparent lack of caring towards next to anything nowadays he does deeply respect his fellow Jaeger pilots.
Known throughout the Jaeger program as the pilot that nearly cost another crew their life and an entire city Marquis is often looked down in disdain, having been nicknamed 'The Convict'. This doesn't bother him though if anything he wears the title with pride knowing that the decision he chose was the right one and that none of these 'kids' have the balls to do whats necessary to win a war.

HISTORY
War. War never changes. The end of the world didn’t occur like predicted; it wasn’t overpopulation nor was it a general lack of resources, hell it wasn’t even global warming or the sun imploding. No, instead it was something we couldn’t have prevented nor was it something we could have foreseen. An invasion, an assimilation an extinction. Some fought back, housing themselves within giant mechanical constructs known as Jaegers these would be heroes began turning the tide in perhaps the most pivotal war in human history. Others accepted their fate, calling the Kaiju attacks as ‘God’s Judgement’; they simply sat on the sidelines awaiting judgement day.
Marquis needless to say hasn’t had the easiest of lives.
Born after the first Kaiju War. Unlike the rest of his generation (who were all seemingly obsessed with Jaegers and Kaiju’s) Marquis’ parents (both religious fanatics) made it abundantly clear that there wasn’t to be any talk about Jaegers (whom they considered to be demons) or Kaijus (who they revered as angels); and for a certain time Marquis believed them.
Such a ‘unique’ mindset didn’t exactly make his family the popular within’ the community. The other children his age would either avoid him outright or ridicule and bully him, calling him names like ‘Kaiju lover’. Eventually after receiving countless death threats the Esperanza’s withdrew from society instead purchasing a farm out in Oregon; far away from the bustle that was Los Angeles.
After becoming a full-fledged adult Marquis was to say the least unsure at how he wanted to live his life. After catching wind of his uncertainty Marquis’ grandfather (a former PPDC Marshall) invited him to move back to Los Angeles to live with him. Eager for a new change of scenery Marquis jumped at the opportunity and moved to his home city. It was there that he found his calling, machinery. Introduced to it by his grandfather Marquis had finally found something he thoroughly enjoyed and that was being a mechanic. He previously dabbled with his fathers pick up every now and then to help change a spare tire or swap out the oil but the sheer idea of taking something apart and knowing exactly how to put it back together again now that was exciting.
Unfortunately for Marquis however fate had other plans.
When the rift reopened and Kaiju reemerged Marquis saw first hand the destruction his would be ‘saviors’ was capable of. It didn’t take long for the young adult to come to the conclusion that he parents were wrong, the Kaiju weren’t humanity's salvation but rather it’s destruction. Without a seconds hesitation Marquis enlisted in the Pan Pacific Defense Corps. Eventually once his time at the academy was complete Marquis was given his very own Jaeger to pilot. Nicknamed, Crimson Dynamo she was a real work of art; needless to say it was love at first sight.
Together with his copilot Juliet the two managed to fell four Kaiju before the catastrophe struck. During a deployment the pilots of Crimson Dynamo quickly found themselves in a conundrum. The Rogue Legacy a fellow Mark 7 Jaeger deployed with the Crimson Dynamo was pinned underneath the surface by a Kaiju nicknamed ‘Thickskin’ while at the same time a second Kaiju named ‘Blowtorch’ was preparing a blast that was directed at the city. The order was to prevent that Kaiju attack no matter what, but they couldn’t simply let the Rogue Legacy drown could they? It was the hardest decision of his life but the Crimson Dynamo disengaged Blowtorch and went to save the Rogue Legacy. At the end of the operation, the Rogue Legacy was saved and both Kaiju eliminated but at what cost? The city though spared major damage still took a pretty bad hit from that free shot Blowtorch was able to take.
While his superiors admired Crimson Dynamo’s sense of brotherhood when it came to it’s fellow Jaegers nasty rumors had already began to spread amongst the populace about the Jaeger’s inability to protect the city. They needed a scapegoat and Marquis unwilling to let his copilot take the fall decided to bear the burden alone. Officially Marquis went ‘awol’ from mission parameters which allowed the Rogue Legacy to be pinned and Blowtorch free target practice on the city. As a result he was imprisoned. Twenty years was his sentence one he would serve out for the good of the Jaeger program. Imprisoned for several years after a string of Jaeger losses a man approached Marquis in his cell. He explained that the program was in dire need of Jaeger pilots and having heard the ‘sacrifice’ he made and the general skill he had piloting one. Marquis was then given the chance to reclaim his life.
Needless to say he accepted. In chains Marquis was transported to Shatterdome 13 and assigned the Samurai Dark. Officially, people know him as ‘The Convict’ a disgraced Jager pilot that nearly lost not only a Jaeger but an entire city. Few people know the official story behind his demise but if there was one thing that was certain this time he wouldn’t go down quietly.
