Winter is a child in adult clothing. So, yes, it is true, what his friends say, Winter has a talent for being a child, lightening the mood with his spontaneous jokes and puns; Winter adventures off to bed thinking of different ways to make the people around him laugh. He is a unique character, and though some might object; Winter, he is easy to get along with because of this child like, 'you only live once' attitude. In other words, people-oriented. Winter is nothing without people, quiet literally. There was a point in Winter's life where he went as far as trying to commit suicide because he had no one to make laugh, or smile.
When someone calls Winter young and to immature for the rank of ranger, he just laughs and makes a joke. Deep down, Winter just wants to cry. No, he isn't the type of person that cries just because he was bullied; he is the type of person that will let his emotions bottle up. Winter, he is a ticking time bomb, waiting for someone to push the trigger. Which could be anyone, but if you just happen to be the one to push the trigger to set him off, he will point out every fault and flaw you have. He is a overly sensitive, hyper child.

In truth, Winter doesn't have a grand history like some generation yaeger pilots do. His mother was a fifty cent prostitute, that never wanted a child, but was blessed with one when a clients cavalry broke. He didn't stick around to wish the child a good life, neither. So Winter never knew his father; he barely knew his own mother. To make matters worst, most of his life was spent in the house of a crack addict.
His start to life, was the motive behind getting his life in order, making a better living then what his mother did. His plan: become a yaeger pilot, a ranger. To start this quest, Winter signed up for jiu-jitsu classes, started working out; get rid of his beer gut, lost all connection with his mother and the crack addict. He was sixteen when he made this life changing decision.
On Winter's twenty first birthday he enlisted in a ranger training program, while he was there they tested for drift ability. Winter was an able drifter; he also was reported to leave the program as a top student, thee top student.
Three years had gone by and Winter was still waiting for his big break. The moment he can say, he finally made a successful life for himself. And, he still would be waiting if his instructor from the ranger training program didn't call and ask if he would like a ranger job. No second thoughts occurred when the, soon to be, youngest pilot accepted. Winter was soon on his way to Shatterdome 13, where he was assigned the yaeger, Samurai Dark.
