Nathan doesn't usually make the best of first impressions. His social awkwardness makes it quite difficult for him to make new friends. But once you've taken the first step and got to know him, he's a really nice guy to hang out with. His jokes and puns are funny sometimes, mostly not so much, but entertaining to hear nonetheless. He's also extremely loyal to his friends. If someone upsets the, he upsets Nathan too. However, that can lead to quite reckless behaviour. Because Nathan is quite easy to trigger, and once he got triggered, he can easily get aggressive (with words, mostly, he rarely fights. He's very smart, but his wits don't help him when he loses his temper, as he shuts them off immediately. His fearsomeness nearly prevented him from being accepted into the Jaeger program, but his remarkable ability to combat fear when he really has to ended up earning him a spot in the program. His extreme stress during a kaiju battle makes him a hard drift partner, though, and his fear might overcome him momentarily during a fight if things go south, causing, again, poor decisionmaking. Hopefully his copilot can counteract that.

Nathan grew up hearing stories, watching documentaries and movies and later reading books about the first kaiju war. He always was fascinated by the idea of piloting a gigantic robot into battle against equally gigantic, malicious monsters. Part of him was almost sad that those times had passed and he would never pilot a Jaeger, not a two-pilot combat Jaeger anyway. Nonetheless, there WERE Jaegers out there, being used for all sorts of stuff. He wanted to become a Firefighter-Ranger, piloting the Jaegers that would rescue people from burning buildings, earthquakes, tsunamis and whatnot. The only reason his brother James didn't want to become a Ranger himself was because he was only interested in the fighting-kaijus-part, something that wouldn't happen ever again... or so they believed. Once the Kaiju reemerged, both brothers decided to apply to the Jaeger program. They got accepted, but James was grounded shortly after due to reckless behaviour, disrespect towards authorities and a whole lot of insubordinance that got him, Nathan and lots of others into trouble. Without a copilot, Nathan was sent to Shatterdome 13 in hopes of finding a compatible drift partner.
